Lying to a Lawyer: Why it’s Tempting & Why You Shouldn’t
When it comes to working with a lawyer, one of the worst things you can do is lie or withhold relevant information. As difficult as it may be, telling the truth is always the best road to take, especially when it comes to law.
Why is Lying to Your Lawyer Tempting?
If a person is considering lying to their lawyer about what happened to elicit the legal case, it is likely because they are either ashamed of what happened, or they think they can win the case without telling the truth. Of course, if they are ashamed of what they did, naturally, they will not want to feel judged by people finding out. However, when it comes to lawyers, this should not be going through their head. Lawyers are not there to personally judge their clients or find amusements in their stories. They are there to work hard to make sure their clients receive the best results possible, given their situation. If the client does not give their lawyer true and full details about what happened, then their lawyer cannot do their job as effectively. That also goes for clients who think they will win their case by withholding the truth...that does not typically happen.
Why is it Never a Good Idea?
One of the major reasons why you hire a lawyer is because of their skill in digging up details on your case, such as receipts, texts, calls, emails, or pretty much anything else that may be useful. If you decide to withhold information or give misinformation to your lawyer, he/she will inevitably discover it. Once this happens, your case could quickly go south, and your credibility will be severely damaged. However, when you tell your lawyer all the details of your case right from the beginning, he/she can prepare for your case as effectively as possible. In addition, your lawyer will also be able to use your truthfulness to boost your credibility. Being truthful with your lawyer is always a better route to take.
When it comes down to it, if you or a loved one ever requires lawyer services, we hope you succeed in putting all your fears, shame, and concerns aside and embrace what is best for your case: honesty.
